Pendlebury AFL mishap but OK for Eagles

Collingwood has dismissed any fears over the fitness of star midfielder Scott Pendlebury after he went down at training on Wednesday.

The Magpies vice-captain suffered a heavy knock to his right knee and fell to the ground grabbing his leg.

Senior coach Nathan Buckley and trainers conferred with Pendlebury for several minutes before he resumed running.

Buckley said later there was no issue with his leg – which he broke in the round-10 clash with Gold Coast.

The Magpies meet West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night as they battle for a top-four spot and a home final, but Buckley said Pendlebury’s fitness would not be a problem.

“He had a knock on the knee and rubbed it better and got the happy spray on it,” Buckley said.

“He was fine after that and finished training pretty well.

“Pain and footy go hand in hand so he was suffering a little bit of pain but he got through well.”

Buckley said a number of players, including captain Nick Maxwell and ruckman Darren Jolly, were in line to return to the side this weekend.

“They are obviously on graduated programs and we are trying to get the full depth of our squad up to speed for Saturday,” Buckley said.

“We’ll give them every chance through the week.”

He said Jolly was suffering a number of niggling injuries but would not be specific.

“He’s a big man, he’s played a lot of footy, he plays one-out in the ruck and he’s generally sore after games and takes a little bit longer to recover,” he said.

Jolly had scans on a leg on Monday but Buckley described them as “purely precautionary”.

Buckley also said defender Heath Shaw had been able to get through “most of training” but said there was enough time for him to prove his fitness.

Collingwood have a selection dilemma with so many players up for inclusion, including Dane Swan, Alan Toovey, Andrew Krakouer, Ben Johnson and Tyson Goldsack all pushing for spots.
