Patton to play for GWS in NEAFL

Greater Western Sydney’s No.1 AFL draft pick Jonathan Patton will play his first game for the club on Saturday when he returns via the reserves.

Patton has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery in Sweden in January.

The power forward will take centre stage when he plays in the Giants’ NEAFL clash with Queanbeyan at Blacktown on the weekend.

Patton went to Europe for treatment of patellar tendinopathy in his left knee – the same injury and process that No.2 pick Stephen Coniglio dealt with last year.

He was originally expected to commence training in April and return to the field in May.

The 18-year-old has been completing limited work away from the main GWS training group and is expected to play for a quarter or a half on Saturday.

Patton’s return means GWS are close to having a full complement of players to pick from.

Steve Clifton (fractured wrist) remains a couple of weeks away, while Kurt Aylett (ACL) and Josh Growden (broken leg) are indefinitely out.

Setanta O’hAilpin returned to the Giants’ NEAFL side last weekend after a debilitating corked calf that had kept him sidelined since the start of the pre-season competition.

O’hAilpin played predominantly in the forward line in his first match for GWS.
