The Warriors take on the Manly Sea Eagles this Sunday, 4.00pm at Mt Smart Stadium. The New Zealand side are so up and down at the moment that they are hard to read going into this encounter. The Warriors will be full of confidence, however, after beating the Broncos by a massive 40 points in the last round. The Sea Eagles are lucky to have Anthony Watmough in the line-up following Origin 1, however, with the Manly side slight favourites to win and improve on their 9 from 10 record against the Warriors.

Panther loss the making of Warriors: Manly

The Warriors’ record-breaking loss to Penrith a fortnight ago humiliated them into action, with Manly coach Geoff Toovey believing they’re genuine challengers for the NRL title.

The notoriously hard-to-predict Warriors reached rock bottom against Penrith, going down 62-6 in the biggest defeat in the club’s existence.

“And I think that kicked them into gear,” said second-rower Justin Horo who attempted to explain the phenomenon of the “bounce back” and how it could save the Warriors season.

“It’s just demoralising. You want to get out there straight after the game.

“I was involved in a few at Parramatta, luckily enough it hasn’t happened at Manly so far.

“You just want to get back out there and play another 80 minutes.

“That’s the focus you take into training the next week and I think that’s what’s been pushing the Warriors the last couple of weeks.”

Since the Panthers debacle, Matthew Elliott’s men produced a stirring victory at home over Newcastle and a monster 10-try victory over Brisbane on Monday.

It’s transformed their “rocks or diamonds” reputation into the stuff of Elliott’s dreams.

And it’s convinced Toovey the Warriors have the potential to repeat their feats of 2011, when they reached the grand final only to be beaten by the Sea Eagles.

“They are a quality side and when things are going right for them they are a chance of winning the comp,” Toovey said on Friday.

“They need to find that consistency and I’m sure they are working hard.

“They’ve won their last two and they’ll want to make it three but we’ll be doing our best to prevent that.”

Toovey confirmed star back-rower Anthony Watmough was a certain starter, having sufficiently recovered from Wednesday night’s bruising State of Origin encounter.

The NSW forward missed Thursday’s training session with the Sea Eagles as he licked his wounds from a physical contest – but Toovey felt the victory would have invigorated his charge.

“He’s a bit tired and carrying a few bumps and bruises but he should be invigorated from a successful campaign on Wednesday night,” he said.

“He’ll be fine, he’s a bit sore, it was a tough match but he’ll be right to play.”
