A 129-point thrashing? Kevin Sheedy has seen worse and won’t be dwelling on GWS’s massive loss to North Melbourne.
The Giants will notch another AFL first next Sunday when they host West Coast at Blacktown and the video of a round two 28.15 (183) to 8.6 (54) defeat by the Kangaroos won’t be on high rotation this week.
“You’ve got to be heading into the next match in a reasonably positive frame of mind,” Sheedy said.
“I went to Sydney once with a better side than this and had 36 goals kicked against them by the Swans back in the mid-80s.
“You’ve been there before. You know what you’ve got to do and you’ve got to get your mind really activated on making sure that we perform better in the next match.”
That the Giants are a term deposit for the AFL is well understood and Sheedy says he saw some positives at Bellerive.
Jeremy Cameron’s four goals impressed Sheedy, while a six-goal third quarter bettered the side’s total in their round one loss to Sydney.
Backmen Chad Cornes, Adam Kennedy and Tim Mohr came in for special praise.
“They’re up against it every week,” Sheedy said. “That will actually make them pretty good players in the end.
“When we finally have a good side they would have been through hell.
“It’s a pretty hard gig.
“Most every week these players are going to go out there and be playing someone better than themselves.
“That doesn’t often happen in your life.
“That’s going to happen to this club for quite some time.”
Sheedy said he would make changes in an attempt to match the Eagles’ size, with ruckman Dean Brogan a likely inclusion.
But he said West Coast’s 108-point thrashing of troubled Melbourne was not necessarily an accurate indicator of form.
“I’m not quite sure how you see Melbourne at the moment,” he said.
“They’ve gone through hell.”
