New concussion research project for AFL

The AFL has continued its push to understand the effects of concussion, announcing a research partnership with a world leader in the field.

The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health will team with the league in research projects over the next five to 10 years.

In a statement, the AFL says the partnership will seek $3 million in third party funding for the research.

The planned research projects will study current and former AFL players to gain a greater understanding of concussion, its causes and its longer term impacts.

It follows the AFL announcing a rule change on Wednesday, allowing the use of a temporary substitute for up to 20 minutes during matches while a player is being assessed for concussion.
