Motlop says new AFL deal close with Cats

Emerging Geelong star Steven Motlop is about to sign a new two-year deal with the AFL club.

Motlop took a contender for mark of the year and was among the Cats’ best on Saturday night in the win over Sydney.

He has only missed one game this season and is in a strong group of younger Geelong players who are developing impressively.

Motlop has big ambitions for his AFL career.

Asked on Sunday if he wants to become one of the game’s top players, he told Channel Nine’s The Footy Show: “I’d like to think so, yeah.”

Motlop expects the new contract to be finalised in the next fortnight.

“It’s all getting done now – I’m pretty happy at Geelong,” he told Channel Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show.

“We have a lot of young guys coming up through the VFL who are going to be good players.

“…the best part about signing with our club, is our future.”

The speedy 22-year-old utility has played 47 games for Geelong since his 2010 senior debut.

After only managing four games in 2010-11, Motlop played 22 last year and 20 so far this season.

His big mark over teammate Mitch Duncan came in the last quarter of Saturday’s match at Simonds Stadium.

“I never go for them, so it just happened,” Motlop said.

He is the younger brother of Shannon and Daniel, who were also AFL footballers.
