Miles backs Martin for AFL Brownlow

Richmond’s Dustin Martin might win the Brownlow Medal this year, according to teammate Anthony Miles.

Miles has backed his 25-year-old midfield partner after seeing the Tiger’s exploits up close this season.

“I believe he could,” Miles said of Martin’s chances to win the league’s most prestigious individual honour.

“Every game that we’ve won he’s been up there in our best players.

“He’s just so explosive and he’s shown in the past that he’s a proven vote-getter … but that certainly doesn’t faze the way Dustin goes about his business.”

With 73 career votes, Martin has enjoyed some success on Brownlow night.

And last year’s winner Nat Fyfe is the only player younger than Martin above him in the all-time vote tally.

After polling 21 votes to place seventh in 2015, Martin has continued his sensational personal form in 2016.

Despite the Tigers’ miserable season, Martin has been named among Richmond’s best in each of their six wins, with sure-fire best afield showings in the past three.

In the round 10 `Dreamtime at the G’ match, Martin reached a career-high 38 possessions.

He backed that tally up and added two goals a fortnight later against Gold Coast.

Against Brisbane in round 14, he notched 35 touches, six clearances and 10 inside 50s.

They’re dominant numbers and have the bookmakers taking notice.

Martin is now among the top six chances among leading bookies and is in third place in the Herald Sun’s Player of the Year award, which has votes cast in a similar 3-2-1 style to the Brownlow.
