Michael Walters still happy at Fremantle

Michael Walters has dismissed suggestions of a rift with Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir after starring in the Dockers’ upset AFL victory over Melbourne.

The sharpshooter slotted three of Fremantle’s six goals in a low-scoring scrap in wet conditions on Monday night at Cairns’ Cazaly Stadium.

Walters’ best-on-ground performance came just five days after he was caught on camera visibly frustrated heading into halftime during the Dockers’ loss to powerhouse Richmond.

It led to reports suggesting Walters was unhappy with his role at the club, and was directing the tirade at the coaches box.

Both player and coach shut down any hint of tension after the Dockers’ sixth win of 2020.

“It’s obviously been a big week for myself, mentally, with what happened last week,” Walters told Fox Footy.

“There was no (bad) intentions to the coaches whatsoever so I just want to knock that on the head.”

A fired-up Walters passionately grabbed his jumper after kicking the only goal of the first quarter.

Walters approached Longmuir during the week after becoming aware of the footage against the Tigers, which showed him mouthing an expletive.

“I didn’t see it. He (Walters) got on the front foot with it after someone told him about it,” Longmuir said.

“He assured me it wasn’t at directed at me, it was just frustration at his performance and previous play and of course I take his word for it so we moved on pretty quick.”

Longmuir was pleased for the 29-year-old to get some reward for effort after recently being down on his usual lofty standards.

“I think a lot gets made of Sonny, the expectations on Sonny are high, but since he’s come back from injury he hasn’t been in horrendous form like what was made out to be during the week,” Longmuir said.

“He just hasn’t been hitting the scoreboard as he would like, we would like, and everyone expects him to do.

“His frustration got the better of him last week and it’s hard to execute your game when you’re frustrated and your emotions boil over,

“He was a lot calmer tonight, he was committed to playing his role for the team which he did exceptionally well.
