The cavalry has arrived for Brisbane ahead of their AFL clash with Geelong at the Gabba on Sunday – and it seems they won’t be holding fire.
Veteran Daniel Merrett was unapologetic as he prepared for his first game back since an ill-fated sling tackle on Essendon’s Michael Hurley in round eight – sparking a three-week absence in which the Lions (15th; 3-8 record) have not tasted victory.
Merrett, co-captain Jonathan Brown and midfielder Brent Moloney are all back, meaning the Lions will field one of their strongest line-ups this season.
While he could not argue with his ban, Merrett said he would not be changing his defensive approach any time soon.
“There’s no room for sling tackles in the game and I’ve learned that the hard way,” Merrett said.
“I’ll have to adapt the way I tackle and I’ve learned my lesson.
“That’s (aggressive) how I’ve got to play. I’m a big bloke in the team and that’s what I’m here to do. That’s when I play my best footy, when I’m aggressive.
“I’ve always been told by the coaches, play like a big bloke.”
The showdown with the Cats (2nd; 10-1) also marks Brown’s return from a “soft” two-week ban for striking Carlton’s Michael Jamison in round nine.
Merrett said he had used his ban to usher in a mini pre-season, working out with Brown.
Due to the ban and last-round bye, Brown has not kicked a ball in anger since May 25.
Meanwhile, Nathan Vardy (back) has been ruled out of Geelong’s side for the clash, replaced by Dawson Simpson.
