Melbourne will be out to restore some pride when they host wooden-spoon favourites West Coast at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Demons are still reeling from an historic collapse to St Kilda, where they squandered a 46-point lead at the final change to lose by six—the biggest last-quarter fade-out in V/AFL history. With pressure mounting on the club’s leadership, Melbourne’s 6-13 record at least keeps them well above the struggling Eagles.
West Coast’s nightmare season continued with a 49-point derby drubbing at the hands of Fremantle, leaving them at a dismal 1-18. The Eagles were comfortably beaten by Melbourne back in Round 8, when Max Gawn dominated in a commanding 32-point win.
The Demons have won five of their past six against West Coast and enter as overwhelming favourites. But after last week’s humiliation, the focus will be less on the result and more on how Melbourne responds.
