Melbourne Demons vs North Melbourne Preview
Its a little odd to say that this game isnt so clear-cut anymore, but when we pose the question, its a discussion for just a bit.
The Roos let one slip against the Pies, and its all excused given where theyre at as a developing side, but whether they can sustain confidence or not after a loss like that is another thing.
The other half of the equation, Melbourne, has crumbled to pieces, and whilst its not by any stretch season over, something needs to revitalise if theyre to make a late-season push to contend.
The loss of Christian Petracca for the remainder of the season is a big blow for the Dees, especially given how out of form it seems the remaining midfielders of Clayton Oliver and Jack Viney seem.
Theres a lot to be desired in the forward half, and execution must change for the Dees to win games of footy convincingly instead of drowning themselves out of games.
North Melbourne needs to generate similar midfield burst and flare as they did against the Pies, and it starts with someone like George Wardlaw who is willing to do the rough and tough work in the contest before dishing it off to the cleaner moving midfielders in LDU and Jye Simpkin.
The fresh legs should benefit the Dees, and home-ground advantage does play as a massive factor, with the Roos last game at the G Round 23 last year.
The natural spread on the ground will fall into the Demons hands, as they love to create wide ball movement with their offensive wingman in Caleb Windsor and Ed Langdon.
Nick Larkey will continue to be the focal point for the Roos but if their small forwards can generate some score as they did against the Pies, they shouldnt find themselves too far out of the contest.
The Roos put in a lot to beat the Pies and fell short, so confidence will be low and theyre up against a team on a break.
