News:

This was a meaningless win that meant a lot.

New Melbourne coach Paul Roos was quick to note that Friday night’s 14-point upset of Richmond was their opening match of the AFL pre-season.

He emphasised the point several times in his post-game media conference, as well as stressing that they have plenty to work on before round one.

The Sydney premiership coach knows better than anyone that most of what happens in the AFL during February is quickly forgotten by March.

But this is Melbourne, home of disaster and calamity. They have finished 13th, 16th and 17th in their past three seasons and had four coaches in that time.

No group needs to see signs of life more desperately than the Demons – players, fans and officials.

“From my point of view, it’s more the game style, the way we play – the win is sort of irrelevant,” Roos said.

“But perhaps for a group that has been pretty fragile, it gives them a bit of confidence.

“So it’s probably pretty important that we hung on in the end.”

Melbourne pulled off the win without key forwards Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes and Jesse Hogan, who are returning from injury.

One of the stars of the night was small forward Jay Kennedy-Harris, who kicked three goals in the last term.

With only a couple of minutes left, he pounced on a shanked transfer kick from David Astbury and ran the ball down the other end for the match-sealing goal.

It is unclear whether the third-round draft pick will make their round-one team, but Kennedy-Harris clearly boosted his chances.

“He is exciting – he has done everything right,” Roos said.

“I tend to want to keep those guys out of the fray a bit, but obviously we have a few guys injured.

“He certainly got in on his merits with a few others unable to play.

“Is he in your best 22? Time will tell but I really like the way he goes about it. He has good habits.”

Melbourne’s next official pre-season game is on February 28 against Geelong in Alice Springs.
