Preview:

The last match of Round 12 is between the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood, Monday, 3.20PM at the MCG.  Collingwood will be big favourites to win this one, with the Magpies having won six of their past seven games despite ongoing injury concerns.   Even with Steele Sidebottom out due to suspension and Nick Maxwell out with a calf injury, it’s hard to go past the Magpies at the MCG.  While the Demons are looking much better than they did a few weeks ago, they are unlikely to trouble the Magpies too much on Monday.

News:

GWS coach Leon Cameron could blood another young Giant in Rory Lobb as he looks to plug the hole left by suspended forward Jeremy Cameron for Saturday’s AFL clash with Essendon.

The club’s leading goalscorer has accepted a one-week ban for a rough-conduct charge over his hit on Hawthorn’s Jarryd Roughead during Sunday’s narrow seven-point loss.

While a decision is yet to be made on his replacement, Cameron said Rory Lobb – a 205cm, 96kg former basketballer – was in the mix to make his senior debut this weekend.

Lobb has been playing both in the ruck and forward at NEAFL level, and could link up with Jonathan Giles or No.1 draft pick Tom Boyd.

“He’s played some really good footy the last two or three weeks,” Cameron said.

“He’s 21 years old, so he’s not like your average 18-year-old.

“He’s played WAFL football for a year or so over in Perth, so I feel as though he could step up to the plate.”

Despite taking some comfort in the Giants’ four-quarter effort against the Hawks on Sunday, the coach says that’ll mean nothing if his side don’t show as much fight against the Bombers.

“There was disappointment that we had an opportunity to knock off the reigning premiers at the MCG, but I think there was also some really positive moments in our game that our players walked away and said ‘that’s the standard that we need to be at’,” he said.

“The challenge is we’ve got to be able to back that up, week after week, starting with Essendon this weekend.

“They’re a very, very good side. They’ve got some quality players, they’re full strength and we look forward to playing them.”

Foundation player Adam Treloar is confident the Giants will withstand the pressure of maintaining some form after an intense week of training and successful recovery.

“We don’t want to be known as a team that plays good one week then plays bad the next week,” he said.

Both of the fledgling club’s two wins this season were at Spotless Stadium, although their last match there ended in a 113-point drubbing by Richmond.
