Melbourne Demons vs Carlton Blues Preview

On the back of respective nail-biters last week, the stage is set for a thrilling Semi-Final on Friday night between two familiar foes.

The Dees proved their own worst enemies last week in a seven-point loss to Collingwood, Simon Goodwin’s side ruing missed set shots after dominating the Pies 69-37 in the inside 50 count.

Carlton fans endured perhaps the most nerve-racking final 60 seconds of their life in last Friday’s six-point victory over the Swans – their first Finals win since 2013.

It wasn’t always pretty, but key veteran names like Adam Saad and Adam Cerra stepped up massively in a big final term, the Blues also the benefactor of Sydney’s own accuracy woes in front of goal.

Looking back, these two sides met only a month ago, a potential sign of things to come in what was a low-scoring, grueling contest from start to finish.

The Blues prevailed by four after kicking three goals in the final term, but even though the Dees led for a total of 20 minutes, they’ll take great confidence away from the fact they won the hit-outs and clearances.

Overall, that’s largely been the story of Melbourne’s season, though.

The Dees continue to do the little things right, but turnovers continue to mar their good work, as was the case last week against Collingwood.

Melbourne has been the worst team when it comes to coughing up the footy, which doesn’t particularly well against a Carlton team that leads the league in intercept marks.

For whatever reason, the Dees also seem intent on playing a rough, unsocial brand of footy that cost them on this same stage last year against Brisbane.

Unless something changes in a hurry, the case for the Blues’ freight train to keep on rolling only grows louder.
