McVeigh to make Swans coaching debut

Sydney co-captain Jarrad McVeigh will make his first move towards a coaching career on Saturday, taking the reins for the Swans’ NAB Challenge match against Port Adelaide.

In a club first, McVeigh will take charge of the coach’s box with the help of the Swans’ usual assistants.

The 30-year-old will also fulfil all pre and post-match commitments, relieving John Longmire of his usual duties for the day.

McVeigh is currently returning from a knee injury and has indicated he would like to pursue a career in coaching after his playing days.

He brings 266 games of playing experience with him to the box, and is racing the clock to be fit for round one after undergoing post-season surgery.

He was the club’s best and fairest in 2008 and 2013.
