McVeigh boots four, Swans beat Suns by 41

Sydney made it two AFL wins on the trot with a 41-point victory over Gold Coast on Saturday, but in the words of co-captain Jarrad McVeigh the reigning premiers are only “just going” at the moment.

McVeigh was best afield at a soggy SCG, pulling the hosts out of the fire after they trailed by one point at quarter-time and booting four goals in a 17.12 (114) to 11.7 (73) triumph.

Tag-teaming taggers Kieren Jack and Nick Smith’s combined effort to curb the influence of Suns skipper Gary Ablett, who had a mere mortal 24 disposals, also had a major say in the result.

However with the exception of a clinical six-goal final term, which came after the Suns trailed by only 22 points at three-quarter time, it was a bits-and-pieces performance from Sydney.

“I think we’re just going at the moment,” McVeigh said after downplaying his own tally of 27 possessions, seven clearances, and eight inside-50s.

“It was good to see that last five or 10 minutes, when we were really hitting in and tackling.

“The first quarter last week (against Greater Western Sydney) is probably the only time we’ve seen that (this season).

“We have to continue that on, because it goes up another level against North Melbourne.”

Swans coach John Longmire suggested two wins, albeit over the youthful expansion sides, was a positive start to 2013.

But the third-year coach noted consistency would be key next Saturday against the North Melbourne in Hobart.

“We’ve certainly showed in quarters we are playing well … it’s just making sure we bring that intensity for four quarters,” he said.

“I thought the longer the game went, the stronger we were.”

Susie Colless, wife of Swans chairman Richard, unfurled the Swans’ 2012 premiership flag under overcast skies and heavy rain, which soon turned torrential in the opening quarter.

It made for an incredibly turgid tussle early and Longmire lamented his side’s inability to handle the wet.

“It was a very simple message (at quarter-time),” Longmire said.

“I just didn’t think we adjusted to the conditions. It was pouring rain and we were still trying to play dry-weather footy.”

With traditional saviour Adam Goodes below his best, McVeigh proved the steadying influence as the showers started to clear in the second term.

In the space of seven minutes, the co-captain kicked two goals and hit the post with another shot to lay the platform for the win.

Suns coach Guy McKenna couldn’t fault his side’s intent.

“I said to the boys this week it’s going to be a mental challenge to see if we can back up after (beating St Kilda in round one)’,” McKenna said.

“I thought they did … it (the difference) was just purely Sydney’s class.”

McKenna felt the final margin was not a fair reflection of the game.

“On the basis of our effort, no I thought we were a lot closer than that … but structurally Sydney make you pay.”

Key defender Ted Richards was chaired off the ground after playing his 150th game for the Swans.
