McLachlan wants AFLW coaches to attack

Chief executive Gillon McLachlan has put the onus on the AFLW coaches, saying the goals will come if they encourage their players to attack.

Low scores continue to be a talking point after the start of the second women’s season, with only five goals kicked in last Friday night’s Carlton-Collingwood marquee match.

But McLachlan was pleased with the overall standard of play in round one.

“That game keeps developing – the crowds and the energy and atmosphere of the games is amazing,” he said.

“We saw three really good games. There was one, I’m not sure … that wasn’t as open.

“For me, it’s the openness of the footy and the attacking mindset. The scoring is an outcome.

“I hope that all eight, rather than just the majority, of coaches take that attacking mindset into this weekend.”

McLachlan said the AFLW had its own momentum and he was “very comfortable” with the standard.

“The unpredictability – the skills are not where the men’s game is – (that) is actually compelling,” he said.

“The standard has improved dramatically from last year.

“I’m really happy with where AFLW is at.”
