McGlynn ruled out of AFL grand final

Sydney small forward Ben McGlynn has been ruled out of Saturday’s AFL grand final due to his hamstring injury.

McGlynn did not take part in the Swans’ main SCG training session on Tuesday, having failed a sprint test earlier in the morning.

A Swans official confirmed McGlynn would not play against former club Hawthorn in the premiership decider.

The 27-year-old was a noted absentee when the Swans took to the field in front of a bumper crowd of approximately 2,000 at 2pm on Tuesday.

McGlynn had been a mainstay of John Longmire’s team prior to his setback and was battling the clock to not only prove fitness, but show he is a calculated selection risk worth taking.

In the end, he was able to do neither and followed in the path of hamstrung Hawk veteran Brent Guerra, who ruled himself out of the grand final on Monday.

It is a cruel twist of fate for McGlynn, who played only three games for Hawthorn in their 2008 premiership season and left the club after their 2009 campaign.

He was in tears after straining his hamstring in the Swans’ qualifying final win over the Crows.

As predicted by Longmire on Monday, Ted Richards (ankle) was among a number of senior players who didn’t complete the full session on Tuesday.

Richards, who looked in all sorts of trouble with an ankle injury against the Magpies, appeared fine on Tuesday and is expected to take on the Hawks.
