Sydney assistant coach John Blakey has regularly told defender Nick Malceski not to push into attack during AFL matches.

Good luck to Blakey the next time he tries having that conversation.

“I’m sure he is happy I went in there (on Saturday),” Malceski noted.

The Swans veteran provided the climax of the AFL grand final, snapping a goal with 34 seconds left to put his side ahead by the final margin of 10 points.

Malceski also bookended the match for Sydney, kicking their first goal with a miracle shot from near the boundary line in the opening quarter.

“I don’t know what I was doing in there,” Malceski admitted about the premiership-sealing goal.

“If you look at the replay, I reckon I fumble it a fair bit. It wasn’t quite in my hands, I took it in mid-air and it went quite high and hoping it made the distance.

“When it did, I knew there wasn’t much time and we were 10 points up and I just went nuts.”

Sydney co-captain Jarrad McVeigh compared Malceski’s celebration to John Aloisi’s frenzied run after his goal put the Socceroos into the 2006 World Cup tournament.

“I just saw the ball going up and I kept thinking `go ball, go ball’ and he took off like John Aloisi did – it was unbelievable,” McVeigh said.

As for his first goal, Malceski admitted he did not know how it went through.

“I was in the pie stand,” he joked.

There were a lot of great stories surrounding Sydney’s fifth premiership and Malceski was among the best.

He was an emergency for the 2005 premiership team and then played in the losing 2006 grand final side.

Then came three knee reconstructions before Saturday’s triumph.

“It was emotional. It was joy. I just can’t explain how good this feeling is with everything I have been through in my career,” he said.

“I’ve done my knee three times and it just does not matter.

“The club had faith in me and I have worked really hard and this moment right now is the pinnacle. I could not ask for more.”
