Magpies turn AFL tables on Bulldogs

Adam Treloar has inspired Collingwood to reel in the Western Bulldogs and complete a perfect pre-season with a two-point win at Etihad Stadium.

In his first senior game in black and white, Treloar helped the Magpies recover a 36-point half-time deficit to win 1.15.8 (107) to 1.14.12 (105).

The pre-season competition that was dead and buried in the wake of Richmond’s farcical loss to Port Adelaide produced an all-time classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs began with pace and precision, with Tom Boyd giving fans in the 12,594-strong crowd plenty to cheer.

The 20-year-old took two soaring first-quarter marks and finished the day with three goals in a promising display.

Caleb Daniel was impressive and best-afield Jason Johannisen, sporting a vibrant haircut, collected 33 disposals and gave the Dogs plenty of run.

On the first half’s evidence, the Magpies had plenty of work to do before their season opener with Sydney in a fortnight’s time.

Collingwood regularly fumbled, particularly in defence, and played with a distinctly pre-season rhythm and deserved to trail.

But there was only one team in the contest in the third term, with Darcy Moore providing two of seven unanswered goals to snatch the lead.

Treloar was in the thick of their comeback, powering the Magpies through the midfield corridor.

The Bulldogs bit back, with Mitch Wallis putting Luke Beveridge’s side eight points ahead with 15 minutes to play.

Moore’s fourth goal for the afternoon had Collingwood in front again, with Treloar kicking a late major.

Jake Stringer had the chance to win it, running into an open goal to kick the Bulldogs ahead with less that three minutes remaining, only for Travis Varcoe to run him down.

In the final minute, Marley Williams found Easton Wood directly from the kick-out but the All-Australian defender’s kick to the square couldn’t be marked and the Magpies squeaked out a victory.
