Magpies’ Fasolo heads north with AFL bye

Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo isn’t bothered with who’s on top of the AFL ladder. This week, he’ll be chasing some sunshine in Port Douglas.

The Magpies, following their 42-point win over Melbourne at the MCG on Monday, are heading to north Queensland for a mid-season break.

And Fasolo, who kicked two goals against the Demons to boost his season’s tally to 14, isn’t taking much notice of the hype around the Magpies’ chances of going one better than last year’s runner-up finish.

“I honestly didn’t know until you told me just now but we’re on top – that’s beautiful,” he said.

“We’re only halfway through the season so we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves.”

Fasolo – a second-year player from Western Australia, who has displayed a talent for kicking goals from all angles – showed his toughness against the Demons as he played on after a heavy collision in a marking contest.

“I copped one in the third quarter that made me panic a little bit,” the 20-year-old said.

“I got winded pretty hard. But it feels alright now so I’ll be fine.”

Fasolo said he wasn’t surprised to see Dane Swan emerge from two games out with hamstring soreness to pick up 42 possessions in a superb performance.

“He’s a superstar,” Fasolo said.

“That’s what he’s done his whole career. He’s a gun.

“Our midfielders were just great all day — Steele Sidebottom, Jarryd Blair, Dayne Beams, ‘Daisy’ (Dale Thomas) — it was a really good team effort.

“We’re going up to Cairns for a bit of bonding and a mid-year holiday for a few days so that will be good to relax and get all the bodies right.”
