Magpie says AFL incident ‘touch and go’

Collingwood utility Tyson Goldsack admits he had no idea whether the ball was completely over the line in the AFL’s controversial score review incident.

Goldsack was the player who grabbed the ball on the goal line after West Coast midfielder Andrew Embley desperately tried to rush a behind in the first term of Saturday night’s semi-final at the MCG.

Andrew Krakouer kicked Collingwood’s first goal seconds later, but the video reviewer suddenly intervened before play re-started.

He eventually ruled that all the ball had crossed the line, ruling it was a rushed behind and infuriating Collingwood fans.

The Magpies eventually won by 13 points.

“I don’t know what happened, it was touch and go … it happened so quickly,” Goldsack told Channel Seven’s Game Day.

“I’d just come up from a tackle, the ball was there to pick up – no, I wouldn’t have known if it was over or not.

“You just have to keep playing until they call you back, you can’t just stop.”

If any part of the ball is on the line, it is still in play.

The AFL issued a statement on Sunday morning, strongly defending how the incident was handled under the video review system that was introduced this season.

“The call to review the Krakouer score last night was made by the video umpire,” the league said.

“He has that power but only six calls to do that have been made by the video person this year as the vast majority are made by the goal umpire.

“The video umpire can call for a review if he sees something before play restarts and the onfield umpires are alerted by audio link.”

Goldsack also said he backed the video review system, despite the circumstances of Krakouer’s goal being disallowed.

“It was a little bit weird when you start setting up … you have a bit of momentum back our way,” Goldsack said.

“It’s a good thing to have – if it went the other way, then you’d like them to call it back.”
