Lions consolidate AFLW top-two berth

Brisbane’s thumping win over GWS has shortened the odds for the Lions and Adelaide contesting the inaugural AFLW grand final.

Kaitlyn Ashmore kicked a contender for goal of the year as the Lions easily took care of the Giants at home on Saturday by 37 points, 6.7 (43) to 1.3 (9).

That boosted the unbeaten Lions’ percentage to 201.5 after four rounds.

The Crows, who were playing Fremantle late on Sunday in Perth to end round four, also are unbeaten and have a whopping percentage of 230.6.

Saturday’s other results leave Melbourne as the only other team with a realistic chance of making the grand final.

But the Demons’ percentage is only 120.9, meaning they are effectively two games off the pace set by the top two teams.

Melbourne are also the only team with a 3-1 record after Saturday’s six-point win over Carlton at Casey Fields.

The Blues rallied from 19 points down at three-quarter time to level the scores, but Richelle Cranston’s late goal gave the Demons the crucial 6.6 (42) to 5.6 (36) win.

Melbourne will be after a big win over Giants this Friday night at Blacktown, ahead of the match of the round two days later when the top two sides clash at Norwood Oval.

Also on Saturday, AFL game development manager Simon Lethlean said they would consider extending the women’s finals series next season.

The inaugural fixture is each of the eight teams playing each other once, followed immediately by the grand final between the top two.

Lethlean said they might consider semi-finals next season for the top four and then the grand final.

In Brisbane, Ashmore first booted the ball from hand into the forward 50 then chased it up with a grubber kick, soccering it off the ground from an almost impossible angle in the forward pocket.

Also on Saturday, Collingwood posted their first win of the season, upsetting the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval by seven points.

The Magpies’ 5.2 (32) to 3.7 (25) win over the Bulldogs was soured by a serious knee injury to Kate Sheahan in her AFLW debut.

The daughter of top former AFL journalist Mike Sheahan was hurt a minute after coming onto the ground.

The Bulldogs were one of the main premiership fancies at the start of the season, but they have struggled with injuries and have now lost three straight on their home ground.
