Brisbane star Pearce Hanley has belittled his five departing AFL teammates, calling them “mummies boys”.

The close of the AFL trade period on Friday afternoon also marked the end of a nightmare couple of months for the Lions.

Patrick Karnezis was traded to Collingwood on Friday as Billy Longer went to St Kilda.

The day before, Elliot Yeo (West Coast), Sam Docherty (Carlton) and Jared Polec (Port Adelaide) had also secured the trades they wanted.

In late August, the Lions sacked coach Michael Voss, which led directly to a messy boardroom battle that was resolved only this week.

Whatever the reasons for the five players deciding to leave Brisbane, Hanley made it clear in a Twitter message that he was unimpressed.

“Life goes on, you grow up and inevitably move away from home … #mummiesboysarehomenow,” the Irishman said.

The Lions were easily the biggest losers out of this trade period and talent manager Rob Kerr said the whole club had to take responsibility for the mass player exodus.

“We learn from it and obviously, as a club, we’ll look back and see what things we need to do better,” Kerr said.

“I’ve said all along, it’s something the club as a whole has to own, these situations.

“We’ll spend a fair bit of time revisiting all aspects of how we bring them in, look after them and do our best to retain them.”

Kerr added there was no one common reason for the five players wanting new homes.

He added that the situation could have been a lot worse.

“We think we have a reasonably positive outcome of what might have been a fairly ugly situation,” Kerr said.

“Bringing a couple of players in and having those six picks inside the 34 gives us an opportunity to re-set and go from there.

“In the first instance, the focus was not to get completely ripped off.

“Day one … no-one was actually putting anything approaching real value on the table.”

The Lions recruited forward Jackson Paine from Collingwood in a swap for Karnezis and traded for Cats ruckman Trent West.
