LeCras renews AFL contract with West Coast

West Coast coach John Worsfold is confident re-signed star forward Mark LeCras isn’t far away from recapturing his best form despite experiencing an “annoying” pain in his right arm.

LeCras is set to finish his career as a one-club player after committing to West Coast for a further four years, tying him to the Eagles until at least the end of 2017.

The 26-year-old only missed one game after fracturing his right arm in the season-opening loss to Fremantle, but was recently forced to spend another fortnight on the sidelines after experiencing soreness in the area.

The 2010 All-Australian’s normally-reliable radar has been off-target this season, with LeCras booting 19.19 compared to the 234.112 he had kicked up until this year.

LeCras, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, showed some promising signs in last Friday’s loss to Hawthorn, and Worsfold said it was just a matter of time before the 110-game veteran returned to peak form.

“He had 10 possessions inside the forward 50m,” Worsfold said of LeCras, who finished the match with 19 disposals and two goals.

“When he’s really up and going, he’ll turn those into more goals or more goal assists.

“He’s not far away. Considering what he’s been through, he’s playing at a pretty elite level.”

Worsfold predicted LeCras would have to put up with the pain in his surgically-repaired arm for a while longer.

“If he wasn’t playing footy for the next month, I’m sure it would resolve itself completely,” Worsfold said.

“So you weigh up how much he can put up with in terms of playing with it versus giving him a whole month or six weeks off and waiting.

“He has been a wonderful player for the footy club and it’s great to have him here. He’s a good young man and most likely now we will see him finish out his career here.”
