Koch wants Port to target big AFL guns

New Port Adelaide president David Koch wants his AFL club to be a destination of choice for stars such as Lance Franklin.

Koch has boldly entered the debate over where Franklin will play next year, saying the Power should be aiming to attract him.

The Hawthorn key forward becomes a free agent at the end of this season.

He has guaranteed intense speculation about his future by postponing contract talks with the Hawks until the season is over.

The most likely outcome is that Franklin will stay, but Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy keeps talking up their potential interest.

Likewise, Koch wants his club to improve to the point where big names are keen to play for the Power.

They are in the midst of rebuilding after several horror years on and off the field.

“We have exactly the same salary cap as any other club,” Koch told Channel Seven’s Game Day.

“Why shouldn’t Port Adelaide be a team of choice?

“We would love to be in the mix for ‘Buddy’.

“Whether he would fit our culture is up to the coaching staff.”

When a mock-up photo of Franklin in a Power guernsey was shown on the screen, Koch cheekily said: “he looks great in those colours.

“We have to have a footy program that players from other teams go ‘I would love to be part of that group’.

“We should be in the market for the best players.”
