Key AFL trades to come as deadline nears

Dylan Shiel, Dayne Beams, Lachie Neale, Jesse Hogan and Chad Wingard are among the AFL stars whose futures will be confirmed on Wednesday.

After 10 days of wheeling and dealing, the AFL trade period will close at 8.30pm AEDT.

There’s no doubt about former Melbourne and GWS star Tom Scully’s next step after he was traded to Hawthorn on Tuesday, but there remains significant intrigue over just how that scenario came to pass.

Scully, a former No.1 draft pick who has played 152 games and is a renowned gut runner, cost the Hawks a measly fourth-round pick in 2019.

On the face of it, despite the Giants’ salary cap issues, it looks like daylight robbery.

But a significant question mark hangs over Scully’s fitness after a major ankle injury in round two ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright also revealed there should be more information about the trade come to light on Wednesday.

“Certainly I think the Scully deal was a lot around the injury that he had,” Wright told AFL Trade Radio.

“But I also think that it’s tied up in a bigger deal for GWS … I think that will probably come to fruition (on Wednesday).

“… We did hear that potentially there were a few GWS players who would be traded at the end of the year and Tom’s name was mentioned … but we didn’t actually speak to Tom until last week.

“Obviously things moved pretty quickly from there.”

Other minor deals went through on Tuesday, but the major dominoes are set to fall on Wednesday when trade period will reach a climax.

Shiel’s switch from GWS to Essendon remained at an impasse, with the Giants demanding an improved offer for the contracted star.

Other key deals to unfold include Beams’ shift from Brisbane to Collingwood, Wingard’s trade from Port Adelaide to Hawthorn, Hogan’s on-again off-again transfer from Melbourne to the Dockers Neale’s move from Fremantle to Brisbane and Rory Lobb’s jump from the Giants to the Dockers.

Gold Coast’s Steven May and Geelong’s Tim Kelly (West Coast) could also find themselves playing elsewhere next year.

Aaron Hall’s long-mooted move from the Suns to North Melbourne finally became official on Tuesday.

The Kangaroos acquired Hall for a bargain price, offloading pick No.68 to complete the deal.

The Suns then on-traded that draft pick to Adelaide, who flipped it to Richmond to secure small forward Tyson Stengle.

Gold Coast sent youngster Jack Scrimshaw to the Hawks for a swap of late picks and the Suns picked up rarely-used midfielder George Horlin-Smith from Geelong.
