Jolly clash to revive AFL bump debate

The controversy over whether the bump is being wiped out of the AFL will flare again on Monday as the match review panel assesses a clash involving Collingwood ruckman Darren Jolly.

The Magpies big man dished out what was pretty much a textbook bump on Geelong’s Mathew Stokes at the MCG on Saturday night.

But the 25cm height difference between the pair meant he caught Stokes in the head, despite Jolly not leaving the ground and keeping his arm by his side.

A report was laid on the night despite Stokes sustaining no notable damage.

The panel’s decision to ban Geelong’s James Kelly for two games – a decision upheld by the tribunal – for a similar clash with Essendon’s Brendon Goddard last round was widely criticised and raised concerns the bump is being driven from the game.

“Sometimes when you’re a big bloke and you just stand there, people run into you,” Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said of the incident.

Two Brisbane players face possible bans for incidents in the opening term of Saturday’s win over Essendon.

Defender Daniel Merrett slung Bomber Michael Hurley to the ground in a tackle which caused the forward’s head to thump into the turf.

Hurley was subbed off with concussion.

Minutes later, Brisbane’s Justin Clarke slammed his body into Essendon’s Elliott Kavanagh, after the Bomber had marked.

In-form North Melbourne key defender Scott Thompson was reported for an off-the-ball hit on West Coast’s Matt Rosa which left the Eagle winded in Perth on Friday night.

And a possible sling tackle by North forward Lindsay Thomas on Adam Selwood, which appeared to momentarily daze the West Coast player, could attract attention.
