Johnson could miss rest of AFL season

Collingwood have suffered another serious injury blow, potentially losing premiership utility Ben Johnson for the rest of the AFL season with a shoulder reconstruction.

The 31-year-old was subbed out at halftime of Friday night’s win over the Western Bulldogs after hurting his right shoulder again.

Johnson saw a specialist on Monday night and the Magpies have confirmed he will undergo the surgery on Tuesday.

At best, he will probably be out of action for three months and the Magpies are hopeful he will be back for the finals.

But they will not know for sure until the surgeon has operated and is able to assess the full extent of the joint damage.

“(He) will commence an extensive rehabilitation program once he’s recovered from the surgery, with a view to making himself available for selection before the end of the season,” Collingwood said in a statement.

The 227-game player had played the last three games after missing the start of the season with a hamstring injury.

Johnson also missed eight games last year with a back injury, but returned for the finals and was among Collingwood’s best in the grand final loss to Geelong.

The Magpies have already lost star midfielder Luke Ball and forwards Andrew Krakouer and Brent Macaffer indefinitely with knee reconstructions.

They were the most serious in a rash of injuries that hit the Magpies over the last few months.

Key players Dale Thomas (hamstring) and Chris Tarrant (calf) are yet to return from their injuries.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have confirmed that young defender Easton Wood will miss three games with a hamstring injury.

Wood was enjoying a breakout game against Collingwood before he was forced off with the injury in the third quarter.

But Lukas Markovic (hamstring) and Christian Howard (knee) could be available for Sunday’s match against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.
