Essendon champion, Jobe Watson’s chances of winning back-to-back Brownlow medals appears all but over with him expected to miss between 4 to 6 weeks after breaking his collarbone.
“Watson was a very well backed second favourite at $6 and considered the only danger to Gary Ablett before his injury. He is now out to $26 and would have to make a miraculous recovery to be any real chance of winning,” Centrebet’s Michael Felgate said.
“We have Watson sitting on 16 votes after round 15, 6 votes behind Ablett so it would be almost impossible for Watson to catch him with 4 to 6 weeks on the sidelines.”
Ablett remains an odds-on favourite at $1.80 but is also on the injury list after suffering a calf-strain that kept him out of round 15 and has him in doubt for this week.
“Ablett could be out to as much as $2.50 if he misses this week and Mitchell and Dangerfield play well. We have Ablett 5 votes in front of them at this stage,” Felgate said.
“Sam Mitchell, $12 into $7, and Patrick Dangerfield $9 into $7 have been very well backed today with punters gambling on Ablett’s injury being worse than first thought.”
