Houli, Cunnington face AFL MRP scrutiny

Richmond’s Bachar Houli and North Melbourne’s Ben Cunnington face a nervous wait ahead of the AFL match review panel meeting.

Houli was reported during Sunday’s 26-point win over Carlton after knocking out Jed Lamb with a crude swinging arm to his face.

A dazed Lamb was helped to the rooms after the first-quarter incident and did not return to the game.

The Blues later confirmed he had suffered a concussion and would have scans later in the week.

With the exception of a $900 fine for wrestling in 2014, Houli has a clean tribunal record, but it will be tough for him to escape a ban given the AFL’s desire to protect players from knocks to the head.

Cunnington is also likely to face scrutiny for an incident involving Western Bulldogs midfielder Toby McLean when the MRP meets on Monday.

A prone Cunnington struck McLean and appeared to make contact with his throat, leaving him at risk of a suspension.

The MRP will also assess a controversial clash between West Coast’s Will Schofield and Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver on Saturday night.

Schofield was reported for striking Oliver with an elbow but it could be the Dees midfielder who is sanctioned for staging, given Schofield made very little contact with his rival.

Oliver claimed to have been stunned by the contact from Schofield, adding that he didn’t want to be known as a “faker”.

The fiery 19-year-old later clashed on Twitter with former Australian Test cricketer Damien Martyn, who likened Oliver’s reaction to something he would expect from a soccer player.

“Hey Damien, you should just worry about that shot in 1994,” Oliver fired back, referring to Martyn’s costly dismissal during Australia’s Test loss to South Africa at the SCG in 1994.

Teammate Jack Viney is likely to escape suspension for a heavy bump on West Coast skipper Shannon Hurn given both players had eyes on the ball.
