Heavy clashes mar Freo win in AFLW

Fremantle has consigned Carlton to last place on the AFLW ladder with an 11-point win in a physical affair on Saturday.

Despite both teams being out of the grand final hunt, neither wanted to finish last and little separated the teams at Fremantle Oval until the Dockers kicked three goals in the opening eight minutes of the last quarter to secure the 9.5 (59) to 6.12 (48) victory.

Fremantle’s Gabby O’Sullivan and Carlton’s Shae Audley were taken out of the contest with concussion. Fremantle also lost ruck Alicia Janz with a knee injury.

Just before three quarter-time a clash between three women summed up the approach of both teams.

Fremantle’s Hayley Miller ran back in the path of a charging Tayla Harris.

Harris’ knee collected Miller right in the ribs, with Dockers defender Tayla Bresland also caught up in the act.

Despite the heavy three-way collision, all three players returned in the final quarter.

Harris and Alison Downie kicked two goals each for the Blues, but ultimately their kicking of 12 behinds cost them victory. They will now finish last with two wins in 2018.

Fremantle avoided the wooden spoon with their third win and showed some encouraging signs with Amy Lavell celebrating her final AFLW game with two goals.

Dana Hooker starred with 25 possessions for the Dockers as they set the win up with goals to Ashley Sharp, Ebony Antonio and Hooker to start the last quarter.
