Sunday’s AFL 2018 Round 10 match is between Hawthorn Hawks and West Coast Eagles. The opening kick is set to commence at 13:10 local time with the game to be played at Etihad Stadium. The away team West Coast Eagles are the favourites for the match. View our preview and teams for the game between Hawthorn Hawks and West Coast Eagles.

When: 13:10 | Sunday 27/05/2018

Where: Etihad Stadium

Preview:

Hawks have now dropped two in a row and I’m concerned with the way they’ve been playing.

They lack depth through the midfield and are too reliant on Tom Mitchell.

West Coast are the most even side in the AFL and they’re equally sound in attack and defence.

Midfielder Elliot Yeo is in doubt with a knee injury and if he’s out, they’ll be able to cover his loss if he doesn’t get up.

If he’s out, what impact will that have on the Eagles?

I think they’ll be able to cover his loss if he doesn’t get up.

KEY BATTLE: Nic Naitanui v Ben McEvoy

Nic Nat is back to his best and is giving his midfielders silver service.

The Verdict

Eagles too much class.

West Coast has a 21-35 (37.5 percent) record in matches played during May since 2016.

AFL News:

West Coast veteran Josh Kennedy admits even he’s been stunned by the team’s white-hot start to the AFL season, but he knows their biggest test will come this weekend.

The Eagles have been 2018’s surprise packets, their 7-1 record putting them equal with the ladder-leading Tigers.

The two teams lock horns on Sunday at Optus Stadium in an intriguing top-of-the-table clash.

Richmond are aiming for back-to-back flags, while the Eagles shape as a dark horse.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson says it’s ridiculous to label Sunday’s match a grand-final preview, but fan excitement has been immense.

Kennedy was always quietly confident the Eagles could deliver this year.

But even he has been blown away by the seven-match winning run.

“I wouldn’t have said we would be sitting 7-1, but we’ll definitely take that,” Kennedy said.

“It’s been good to see our young kids come through and play well. And the whole team, as a unit, is playing well together.

“It’s exciting to be in this situation. But we don’t look too far ahead, because sometimes you can lose track of where you’re walking and you can trip over.”

West Coast have introduced six debutants and a host of other youngsters into their line-up. Their energy has reinvigorated what had been the oldest list in the competition.

“They’re pretty grounded, they’re pretty present in the moment, which is something we’ve been preaching with them,” Kennedy said.

“Richmond won the flag last year and have been playing sensational football. We know it’s going to be a massive test for our boys, to play the best team in the comp.”

Tigers ruckman Toby Nankervis is no certainty because of a wrist injury.

If he is ruled out, it will leave back-up ruckman Ivan Soldo with a monumental task against in-form Eagles duo Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett.

West Coast have been bolstered by the return of Naitanui (suspension), Jeremy McGovern (calf), Lewis Jetta (calf) and Dom Sheed (foot).

Richmond go in unchanged.

Kennedy has booted 15 goals in five games this season since returning from an ankle injury.

The 30-year-old has been the focal point of West Coast’s forward line for most of the past decade, but says he has been happy to take a back seat this year in a more even attack.

Jack Darling is in career-best form, while Jake Waterman has performed strongly in his debut season.
