Preview:

Friday night’s game and the first of another shortened round sees Hawthorn hosting West Coast.

The Hawks recorded their tenth win of the season last week with a 15 point win over Carlton. They were made to work hard for their victory and had to claw their way back from a seventeen point deficit in the third quarter.

It was their first run in two weeks after having the bye in round 11 where they had a soft win over Melbourne and will strip better for it.

Their opponents this week are coming of the bye and a narrow victory over St. Kilda in round 11, 84 – 80.

That was the Eagles’ sixth win of the season and they currently sit just outside the eight in ninth position on the ladder however, their record of 0-4 against sides in the top four have prevented them breaking into the top half the competition.

Hawthorn accounted for West Coast by 50 points when the two sides met earlier this year in Round 2 but, a closer look at the betting stats this season suggest the Eagles – with the start, may be an option.

The Hawks are 2-4 when playing at home as favourites this year and, taking out their victories over the struggling GWS and Melbourne in recent rounds, the Hawks average winning margin has been 18.4 in the past seven rounds.

AFL stars return for Eagles against Hawks
Four of West Coast’s biggest stars, including captain Darren Glass, will return from injury for Friday night’s AFL clash with top-placed Hawthorn.

The Eagles also regain fellow experienced backman Beau Waters and forwards Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras for the Etihad Stadium encounter.

West Coast have made six changes in all, with Bradd Dalziell and Patrick McGinnity their other inclusions and injured pair Adam Selwood (back) and Josh Hill (hamstring) among their omissions.

The Hawks lost Isaac Smith to a calf injury.

St Kilda have made four changes, including the indefinite suspension of Stephen Milne, for Saturday’s MCG meeting with Melbourne.

Veteran tall forward Justin Koschitzke is among their inclusions, while Sam Fisher returns from a foot injury.

New Demons interim coach Neil Craig will have to manage without ruckman Mark Jamar (toe) and tagger Jordie McKenzie (elbow) for his first game in charge.

But key forward Chris Dawes has been named, despite injuring an ankle in the club’s last match.

Melbourne have added debutant Mitch Clisby as one of four inclusions.

Ex-Adelaide big man Kurt Tippett will make his much-anticipated debut for Sydney against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

The Swans have lost ruckman Shane Mumford to a cheekbone fracture and utility Andrejs Everitt (achilles).

The Power will be without captain Travis Boak (finger) and Cameron Hitchcock (ankle), but have regained former skipper Domenic Cassisi and Jasper Pittard from injury.

Brisbane will regain star forward Jonathan Brown and key defender Daniel Merrett from suspension for Sunday’s Gabba match against Geelong, while midfielder Brent Moloney has been named on an expanded bench to return from injury.

The Cats have recalled star pair Harry Taylor and Mark Blicavs, who were both rested for their last match, and named Jimmy Bartel despite speculation he might be rested.

Lively Fremantle forward Michael Walters is set to return from injury for Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne in Perth.

The Kangaroos have lost defender Scott McMahon (ankle).

Western Bulldogs father-son recruit Lachie Hunter will make his AFL debut against an unchanged Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
