Hawthorn Hawks beat Sydney Swans – 2013 AFL Round 7 results

Hawthorn’s key forwards overwhelmed Sydney in the first half to set up a 37-point win in their AFL grand final rematch on Saturday night.

Hawks captain Luke Hodge was best afield with 32 possessions at the MCG as his team won 18.11 (119) to 12.10 (82).

After starting the season with a narrow loss to Geelong, Hawthorn have won six straight to take care of their tough early-season draw.

In stark contrast to last year’s grand final, Hawthorn’s forwards starred and kicked accurately.

Jarryd Roughead kicked four goals and Lance Franklin broke his two-game drought with three.

Late in the second term, Roughead and Franklin had a combined seven kicks for six goals.

Ruck-forward David Hale and Jack Gunston also kicked three apiece.

The league’s controversial scoring review system is under the spotlight again after an incident early in the last term.

Swans defender Dane Rampe touched a shot from Jordan Lewis on the line and the umpires conferred for more than a minute before reviewing the incident.

When the goal was eventually disallowed, Hawks fans were furious and repeatedly chanted “bulls***”.

The match was effectively over when Hawthorn led by 40 points at halftime and extended that to 47 points early in the third term.

But typical of the Swans, they never stopped competing and reduced the margin to 25 points with about 10 minutes left.

The Hawks then saw off the challenge with the last two goals.

Midfielder Josh Kennedy (30 disposals) and utility Adam Goodes (27 disposals) starred for Sydney.

Franklin provided the highlight of the game in the second term when he fended off two Swans defenders to snap an outstanding goal.

But he also somehow missed a shot in the last term from no more than three metres out.

There was a symbolic moment in the third term when Sydney defender Nick Malceski had a shot at goal.

Malceski broke Hawthorn’s collective heart in the grand final last September when he snapped the sealing goal.

He also kicked an amazing goal early in the grand final, but on Saturday night his shot went out on the full.

While Hawthorn had an impressive win, coach Alastair Clarkson was furious in the box as the third term turned into a stalemate.
