Hawks snatch draw to give GWS another tie

Hawthorn and Greater Western Sydney have played out a thrilling draw in Launceston, with a late goal from the Hawks’ Will Langford giving the Giants their second AFL tie in a row.

GWS trailed by 15 points heading into the final term and looked to be on track for a comeback win with a six-goal fourth quarter at Aurora Stadium on Saturday.

But the Hawks had other ideas, rallying late to steal a 14.13 (97) to 15.7 (97) at the death.

There were moments of confusion on full-time as Hawthorn players appealed for a rushed behind only to be denied, with the umpires ruling the siren had sounded before the ball crossed the line.

It’s the second draw in a row for the Giants, who tied 68-all with Geelong in round 15.

Langford’s final major was one of three for the day and fellow Hawks Luke Breust, Taylor Duryea and Ricky Henderson kicked doubles.

Giants big man Jonathon Patton booted five goals, including the score that gave his side a one-point lead in the final quarter.

He was backed up by Tom Scully and Devon Smith, who kicked two apiece.

At their home away from home, Hawthorn trailed 51-42 at half-time but fought back in a stirring third quarter.

The Hawks’ Tom Mitchell finished with a game-high 39 disposals ahead of Giants trio Josh Kelly (34), Callan Ward (32), Dylan Shiel (31).

The result means GWS slip to second on the ladder.

The Adelaide Crows hang on to top spot after their demolition of the Western Bulldogs.
