Hawks get extra day to decide on AFL bans

Hawthorn have been given until Wednesday to decide whether they will challenge bans handed to Brian Lake and Cyril Rioli over grand final incidents.

Fremantle’s Nick Suban will front the tribunal on Tuesday night to answer a charge of making unnecessary and unreasonable contact to the face of Hawk star Sam Mitchell.

Suban hasn’t been offered the chance of an early plea, after he grabbed Mitchell’s face in the first quarter.

Lake has been charged over an elbow to the face of Fremantle forward Michael Walters.

He will risk a four-match ban if he fights the charge, under the AFL system of dishing out double demerit points for grand final offences.

He can accept a three-match suspension for an early plea.

Rioli can accept a one-game sanction for a chicken wing tackle on Fremantle’s Michael Barlow, or risk missing the first two rounds of next season if he fights his charge.
