Hawkins stars as Geelong thrash Port

A six-pack of goals to spearhead Tom Hawkins helped Geelong crush Port Adelaide by 48 points on Saturday.

The Cats blitzed Port with seven goals to none in the opening term, setting up their 18.8 (116) to 9.14 (68) win at AAMI Stadium.

Mercurial midfielder Steve Johnson orchestrated the onslaught with 33 disposals, while James Podsiadly (four goals) and Steven Motlop (two goals) were influential.

Geelong’s defence trio of Harry Taylor, Corey Enright and Andrew Mackie countered any attacking threat from Port, who crashed to their fourth loss in a row.

Power utility Chad Wingard, Robbie Gray and captain Travis Boak battled against the tide while veteran Matt Thomas, Jay Schulz and Kane Mitchell each kicked two goals.

But the Cats’ execution was swift and brutal: their 7.1 to 0.4 opening quarter was triggered by Johnson’s 11 creative disposals for the term.

Port didn’t manage a goal until 10 minutes into the second quarter – Geelong already had banked nine goals, and their eighth win of the year.

To halftime, Johnson and Taylor had each logged 18 disposals while Enright and Mackie both gathered 16 touches and repeatedly created attack from their backline posts.

The Cats took a commanding 40-point lead into half-time and then surged again in the third to rapidly kill off any hopes of a Port comeback.

With Hawkins booting three of five goals for the quarter, Geelong overwhelmed Port, who managed just one goal for the term to Thomas.

The Power trailed by 62 points at the last change but belatedly made some ground in the final term as Geelong took their foot off the pedal.

The Cats now host Gold Coast while Port play Western Bulldogs in Darwin, both games next Saturday night.
