‘Hard questions’ asked at AFL’s Bulldogs

Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has dismissed reports coach Brendan McCartney went within a whisker of losing his job last month.

McCartney is contracted until the end of the 2016 season.

But his position was supposedly in jeopardy following the Bulldogs’ poor finish to 2014, when they claimed one victory from the final six rounds.

“We have been through a period where we have asked each other hard questions and we have asked hard questions of ourselves,” Gordon said on Tuesday, when the club unveiled its new logo.

“It’s largely been a very constructive process and I think you will find in 2015, we will emerge stronger from it.”

Gordon denied McCartney was at the centre of that discontent.

“I certainly had a series of good discussions with management, with coaching staff and with players and they all had good discussions with each other,” he said.

“The most important thing to do is to do it honestly, to embrace the struggle.”
