Greater Western Sydney have locked away more of their young AFL talent and are set to reveal the re-signings next week.
GWS chief executive Dave Matthews announced last month his club had agreed on terms with Dylan Shiel, Tom Bugg, Adam Tomlinson, Matt Buntine and Adam Kennedy until the end of 2015.
Matthews said at the time that others were poised to follow and, on Friday, he revealed just how far negotiations had developed.
“We’ve got some announcements we’ll make in the next week. We’ll announce some extensions,” Matthews told AAP.
The Giants are prime pickings for AFL rivals looking to start a dialogue with some of their prized draftees on initial two-year contracts.
GWS’s Jonathon Patton, Steve Coniglio and Dom Tyson headline a burgeoning wishlist of opposition recruiters with their sights set on Breakfast Point.
Matthews has made no secret that extending youngsters’ contracts has been the expansion club’s priority – as opposed to trying to lure a big fish like Travis Cloke to western Sydney.
Meanwhile, Matthews noted GWS were on track for a crowd of about 8000 on Saturday against Richmond at Showground Stadium.
“Which is a big number in the Sydney market – but a number we want to build and improve on,” he said.
Matthews said his club was still in an experimental stage as they determined how best to boost crowd sizes.
“We’re in the early days of trying to work out what is the best timeslot for us.
“Where ideally would we be fixtured?
“We’re working through our fixture submission for 2013 at the moment.”
However he acknowledged a 2.10pm (AEST) start was less than ideal for those with an interest in Sydney Australian rules fixtures.
“The other thing I think we’ll do once we finalise next year’s fixture is work more closely with local football and see if we can schedule away from each other.
“A lot of local football is on (Saturday). So that probably costs them an opportunity to come and watch us.”
