GWS on track for record crowd

Greater Western Sydney officials are confident the club is on track to achieve their biggest Spotless Stadium crowd and a possible first AFL sellout of the venue for Sunday’s derby with the Swans.

The record AFL crowd at the 22,000 capacity ground stands at 19,507, from last year’s Sydney derby.

Only around 300 general admission tickets were left unsold on Monday afternoon with some reserved seating still available.

Spotless Stadium is fast becoming a fortress for the sixth-placed Giants, with the second-placed Swans the only one of the last seven visiting teams to win there.

GWS could get a couple of key players back for the game.

Veteran midfielder Ryan Griffen is expected to be available after missing six games with a back problem and the Giants match committee must decide whether to bring him back through the reserves or throw him straight into the senior side.

Defender Adam Kennedy is a chance to face Sydney after missing the Geelong match with back and shoulder soreness.

The Giants will turn for home with the same (7-4) record as they had at the halfway point of their 2015 campaign.

Their season went south from there after influential former Swans ruckman Shane Mumford missed the second half of the year, in which they won just four out of 11.

Although they are a little bit light on for key defenders with Aidan Corr, Caleb Marchbank and Tim Mohr on the injured list, the Giants have most of their stars fit and firing.

Their draw over the second half of the season appears significantly softer than their current torrid run of four successive matches against other top eight sides, which ends this weekend.

The sixth-placed Giants aren’t scheduled to play another side presently above them on the ladder until they face North Melbourne in the final round.

Their next four games are all against teams in the lower half of the ladder, including the bottom and second from bottom sides.
