Greater Western Sydney midfielder Taylor Adams was suspended for one match and fined almost $3500 by the AFL club on Thursday for his role in a fracas outside a Geelong nightclub.
Adams, taken with pick No.13 in last year’s draft, will miss Saturday’s derby clash with Sydney and has been fined $3477 – the maximum five per cent of his base playing wage.
GWS sidelined him for two games, one of which will be a suspended sentence that can be activated by the club or the AFL if Adams engages in “notifiable conduct” before the end of 2013.
Other club-imposed sanctions included 10 weeks of community service in western Sydney and participation in an appropriate education course as recommended by the AFL or AFL Players’ Association.
The club’s punishments come three days after he appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to one charge of recklessly causing injury and a charge of affray.
Two assault charges were dropped, while Adams was ordered to serve a six-month diversion order for the late-night incident in January that left one man with a fractured jaw.
GWS chief executive David Matthews said the AFL agreed the penalties were suitable.
“We take these matters extremely seriously and it is important as the AFL’s newest club that we send a strong message to our playing group and the wider community that we won’t accept this type of behaviour,” Matthews said.
“To his credit, Taylor has accepted responsibility for his actions and we believe he will learn from this and become an important part of our club for many years to come.”
Magistrate Ron Saines told Adams on Monday he was lucky to receive a diversion order.
Saines fined Adams $1000, ordered him to write apology letters and pay $150 compensation to one victim and $30 to a second.
“I am extremely sorry for what happened and very disappointed in my actions,” Adams said in a statement.
“Violence of any kind is unacceptable and I know I have done the wrong thing and will learn from this and become a better person.”
