Melbourne have suffered a setback with co-captain Jack Grimes suffering a shoulder injury at training on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old hurt himself in a collision during regular drills and left the ground with his arm in a sling.
After an early examination, the club decided to send Grimes to have scans as a precaution, club football manager Josh Mahoney said.
“He was involved in an incident at training and is getting scans today,” Mahoney said.
“The club will provide an update when one comes to hand.”
The problem is another in a series of injuries Grimes has had to deal with, including back problems which hampered him in 2008 and 2009.
He missed the last half of 2010 and, last year, had to deal with a foot injury which caused him to be out for most of the season.
Since making his debut with Melbourne in 2008, Grimes has managed a total of only 32 games.
Grimes was named captain along with Jack Trengove earlier this month.
The news compounds Melbourne’s worries, with coach Mark Neeld confirming on Wednesday that livewire forward Liam Jurrah would probably miss the opening round of the AFL season after wrist surgery.
“He’s going to have to come back through the VFL so that is where he is at,” Neeld said.
“We know he has had complications with his wrist. It lasted four weeks in a cast and didn’t heal. He had to have an operation and he can’t join in full training.”
While the issue has become a little drawn out, Neeld said there was no long-term concern about Jurrah.
“Unfortunately, we had to go back and have a second go at it. It’s not a concern but no one wants their players to be injured and we’ve got a couple, but again, that’s footy,” he said.
The Demons’ other co-captain, Jack Trengove, is also on the sick list after experiencing soreness in his leg following training last week.
“He’s coming along well but he won’t play this week,” Neeld said.
Trengove is aiming to return for the NAB Cup round-three game against Hawthorn.
