Greene in good head space for AFL return

GWS Giants coach Leon Cameron expects Toby Greene to be nervous in his AFL comeback against Adelaide, but says the midfielder is in a good head space after serving a club-imposed five-game suspension.

Greene was also fined $5000 for drinking alcohol while injured and not properly notifying the club after he was charged by police with several assault-based offences following an incident at a Melbourne nightspot in May.

Greene was recalled for Saturday’s Spotless Stadium encounter after just one game in the reserves, in which he notched 40 possessions.

“He’s going to be nervous, he hasn’t played for six weeks of AFL,” Cameron said on Friday.

“Fitness-wise, head space-wise and form-wise he’s ready to go.

“Toby was disappointed with what happened, but his actions at this footy club have been fantastic.”

Tom Scully, who returns to the side following injury, was part of the leadership group who decided on the severity of Greene’s punishment.

“The soft option would have been to probably go a bit lighter,” Scully said.

“But I think the club made a pretty strong stance and obviously our off-field stuff needs to be squeaky clean.

“Trying to build a club and trying to build a culture, we can’t have those type of things happen.”

Finals aspirants Adelaide have enjoyed an average winning margin of 91 points in their four fixtures against GWS.

The Crows have kicked two of the five highest scores against GWS and inflicted the second heaviest defeat in their history.

“I think it’s totally different now,” Cameron said.

“Our last five weeks, we feel as though we’ve made some really serious inroads to competing for longer in this competition.

“Adelaide are coming off a terrific win, knocking off Port Adelaide, you’ve got to give credit where credit is due.

“They are playing some really good footy and they are probably at full strength, but we love playing at Spotless Stadium.

“We feel as though it’s our best chance to take it up to Adelaide in the three or four times that we’ve come up against them.”

Cameron said he would be really disappointed if the Giants dropped away over the final third of a season in which they have won a club-record four games.

“We’re playing to make sure our gameplan keeps progressing our defensive acts keep progressing and the respect of the footy world,” Cameron said.

“We haven’t got that yet.”
