Greene facing AFL suspension for blow

Toby Greene’s striking charge has plenty plenty of comment around the AFL because of comments from umpire Shaun Ryan.

The GWS forward is certain to face suspension after collecting Western Bulldogs Caleb Daniel in the face.

The blow forced Daniel from the ground during Friday night’s match with a split lip.

Soon after the incident, Ryan was heard on Channel Seven’s telecast warning Greene about his on-field conduct.

“We’ve been telling you for a couple of weeks now you’ve been getting very close to the edge,” Ryan said.

The match review panel threw out a headbutting charge against Greene last week, while the week before he was fined for striking.

Giants coach Leon Cameron said over the weekend he would be disappointed if the umpires had pre-conceived ideas about players.

Former Sydney star Jude Bolton also had his concerns about Ryan’s comments.

“It was obviously a real, dirty little act from Toby Greene – he does have some history,” Bolton told Channel Seven

“But I do start to worry when the umpires are commenting on previous incidents.

“Hopefully the umpire are just judging it as they see it.”

Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade said he thought Ryan judged the incident on its merits.

“The umpire saying what he said is probably letting Toby know for his own sake – ‘listen, we’re watching’, which I think is only a human element,” Eade said.

Hawthorn veteran Luke Hodge said Ryan had done the right thing.

“What Shaun Ryan did was perfect … it was a good discussion between them,” he said.

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe will also come under match review panel scrutiny for throwing his arm back and collecting West Coast’s Elliot Yeo as they tangled at a stoppage.
