Preview:

The Swans take on the Giants on Saturday, 4.40pm at Spotless Stadium.  Much like last year, the Giants will be massive underdogs for this match, in what has been dubbed the ‘Battle of the Bridge”.  Despite landing premiership trio Shane Mumford, Heath Shaw, and Josh Hunt, GWS still have a long way to go before making a real impact on the AFL competition.

The Swans also initiated some aggressive transfer action in the off-season, bringing Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin into the fold.  Both of these clubs have had mixed pre-season results, with the Swans winning the NAB Challenge before losing to West Coast by 35 points.  The Giants had a big 68-point win against St Kilda, in an outcome fans will be hoping signals the start of a new era.  Even with a more competitive Giants outfit, however, they will be struggling to make an impact against the Swans this weekend.

News:

Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Cameron expects to play in Saturday’s opening-round AFL derby with the Sydney Swans, after initially being concerned about an ankle injury.

All-Australian representative Cameron rolled an ankle in the Giants final pre-season practice game against Adelaide last Friday.

The leading GWS goalkicker in 2013 will test it out at training on Friday, but was confident he would be right to tackle the Swans in the first match between the two clubs at the Giants main home ground.

“I’ll probably have a bit of a test tomorrow just to see how I go,” Cameron said on Thursday morning.

“I’ll go from there, but it’s feeling pretty good.

“At this stage, I would expect to play.”

Cameron said he was concerned at the time he got the injury, which he revealed was the result of friendly fire.

“When it first happened, I was kind of in a bit of shock,” Cameron said.

“I’ve never really rolled an ankle before and when you look at it, I actually trod on (Giants defender) Phil Davis’s foot, so that was the reason behind me rolling my ankle.

“At first I was probably down for a little while and a bit scared to put any weight on it.

“But when I did I could walk around and it was starting to free up as I tried to get off the ground.

“That was encouraging signs, and then a lot of ice after that.”
