News:

Top AFL draft pick Tom Boyd will have his first hitout for the GWS Giants reserves this weekend, with coach Leon Cameron making no guarantees for a start in the opening round clash with Sydney.

While No.2 pick Josh Kelly will have his first run for the Giants in their NAB Challenge match against St Kilda in Wagga on Saturday, Boyd will play in Canberra against an ACT under-23 team coached by former Giants coach Kevin Sheedy.

“Josh played the intra-club where Tom didn’t so he’s probably a week or two ahead of Tom in terms of match practice and preparation,” Cameron told AAP.

“Tom has had an interrupted last two or three weeks with a minor quadriceps (injury) so he hasn’t had much game time in terms of match practice, so he’ll play down in Canberra.”

Missing the game in Wagga would give Boyd just one pre-season hitout against Adelaide to stake his claim for a round one spot against the Swans on March 15.

Cameron said he understood the high expectations of the top draft picks, but their early season prospects would be determined by whether they could sustain the intensity needed to play senior football.

“That’s a massive jump from under 18s TAC Cup to AFL intensify,” Cameron said.

“But I don’t put a ceiling on those boys.

“We let them roll, and we let their actions do the talking. They’ve slotted in really well at the footy club, along with all our draftees.

“Whether the boys play round one time will only tell.”

Cameron said 19-year-old Kelly had made an early impression through his professionalism.

“He’s a very creative midfielder, he wins his ball inside and he also wins it out,” Cameron said.

He said the Giants’ five main pre-season recruits Heath Shaw, Shane Mumford, Dylan Addison, Josh Hunt and Jed Lamb would all play against St Kilda.

The only injury concern was midfielder Tom Scully, who has a sore ankle.

Cameron wasn’t surprised or concerned by AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick’s declaration last week that the Giants had no excuses for heading into their third season.

“Our kids don’t use any excuses, we’re here to perform week in week out,” Cameron said.

“We’re a young club and we’re ready to roll.

“I think our players are ready to advance to the next level.”
