The Suns are hoping to break a nine-year hoodoo when they meet the Dees on Saturday.

Stuart Dew’s side returns home to the Gold Coast in good form following an upset win over Richmond last week, a performance headlined by Ben King’s four-goal bag and a strong defensive effort that saw the Tigers held to just four goals in the second half.

The Dees have also steadied the ship with a pair of wins over Richmond and North Melbourne, and with the forward line firing on all cylinders, they still remain the highest-scoring team in the competition through the first two months.

Melbourne has shown on a couple of occasions this year that they are capable of the odd stinker. Potent forward lines like Essendon’s and Brisbane’s has tested them so far, meaning if King and Jack Lukosius are on this week for the Suns, this could turn into quite the battle.

The Suns have also been a surprisingly good team in several key statistical categories so far. They still struggle to play four solid quarters of footy, but Gold Coast ranks top five in tackles, clearances, and marks per game.

The one trend that does warrant concern is the fact the Suns have lost three games in a row to top eight opponents by 25+ points.

Given Melbourne are almost healthy again, the Dees probably win this game, but there’s an argument to be made for the Suns putting up a decent score.
