The Gold Coast Suns and Essendon Bombers will open their 2025 campaigns at People First Stadium on Saturday afternoon, both aiming to end long finals droughts.

After a club-record 11 wins in 2024, the Suns are optimistic about making their first-ever finals appearance. They’ve bolstered their lineup with Daniel Rioli and John Noble, although Jack Lukosius has left the club.

Essendon also recorded 11 wins last season but fell short of finals, extending their streak of seasons without a finals victory to 20. The Bombers have invested in youth, bringing in academy graduate Isaac Kako to partner Nate Caddy in attack, while key departures include Dyson Heppell (retired) and Jake Stringer (traded).

Gold Coast dominated both encounters between these sides last season, winning 87-86 at Marvel Stadium after the siren and 91-80 at home. Matt Rowell was instrumental, averaging 29 disposals and 8.5 clearances in those games.
