Goddard nets Saints first round pick

St Kilda’s loss of Brendon Goddard to AFL free agency has been compensated with a first-round draft pick.

The Saints will receive pick 13 in the upcoming national draft after Goddard’s decision to quit the Saints for a lucrative offer at Essendon.

Goddard was the highest-profile player to move during the league’s first official free agency period, which ended on Friday.

The selection given to St Kilda was among six compensation picks doled out to clubs who lost players.

Port Adelaide received two second-round picks for losing Danyle Pearce to Fremantle and defender Troy Chaplin to Richmond – No.30 and 31.

It gives the Power four picks in the top 31 at the draft.

Melbourne’s loss of experienced midfielder Brent Moloney netted them a third-round pick, No.49.

West Coast and Hawthorn were also given third-round picks for losing forward Quinten Lynch and wingman Clinton Young to Collingwood.

Young’s was the last free agency deal done on Friday – the Hawks’ 2008 premiership player confirming he would join the Magpies.

Adelaide will receive no compensation for losing half-forward Chris Knights to Richmond.
